Visual Art: No Destinations Beforehand: Three Artists with Autism

Davis Gallery, Houghton House, Hobart and William Smith Colleges
On Friday, April 2, "No Destinations Beforehand: Three Artists with Autism," an exhibit of paintings and drawings by artists Larry Bissonnette, Jonathan Lerman, and Jessica Park, will be featured in the Davis Gallery at Houghton House and will remain on display through Friday, April 23. Part of Hobart and William Smith’s Festival of Disability and the Arts, in connection with a special Seneca Review issue on disability, this show brings together three widely recognized and influential disabled artists. Larry Bissonette, Jonathan Lerman, and Jessica Park each approach their work with a distinct vision and voice, and present to the non-disabled world a stunning example of creative expression and visual power. Subtle, rich, and surprising, the works in this show challenge our notions of what it means to be disabled, and offer a model of intelligence, sensitivity, and communication. "Fastening labels on people is like leasing cars with destinations determined beforehand." --Larry Bissonnette
