Presence: The Figure in Contemporary Painting
Visual Art: Presence: The Figure in Contemporary Painting
The Davis Gallery at Houghton House is open Monday thru Friday, 9-5, Saturdays 1-5 and closed on Sundays and is located on 1 Kings Lane off of South Main Street, Geneva
The presence of figures in a painting often invites us inside. The figures present in paintings implicity tell us something about what it is to be human. But the word presence has at least one other significant meaning in the history of painting, referring to the idea that the arrangement of shapes and colors on a flat surface can produce a visual experience that is more meaningful than just the sum of its parts. This show, featuring the work of Jermy Long, Kurt Moyer, and Kyle Staver, explores the idea that beautiful figure painting is at once visually powerful and psychologically rich.
